Local Information

WATERFORD (POP. c.40,000)

Bisected by the River Suir this ancient city (founded by the Vikings) has grown and matured to become the Capital of the South East. The City Council has transformed the City Centre with pedestrianised streets, seating areas, tree planting, pavement cafes, a Heritage Centre, restored churches and a magnificent marina boardering the quay.

There are many excellent schools (further details on request) including De la Salle (boys – day pupils) Newtown School founded by the Quakers in 1794 (now day and boarding non denominational and non sectarian) Waterpark C.B.S. (mixed – day), Ursuline Convent (girls – day) Mercy Convent etc. There are 2 magnificent Cathedrals and numerous churches of all denominations.

The City aboards with pubs and clubs, restaurants, theatres, cinema and great shopping centres and the coast as in Dunmore East, Woodstown and Tramore is within 10 miles.

The City is rightly proud of its highly regarded and expanding W.I.T. which caters for thousands of students each year and soon we hope to be the University of the South East.

TRAMORE (POP c. 10,000)

Tramore boasts a 3 mile long sandy beach for swimming, surfing, kite flying, wind surfing, sailing, walking etc. The surrounding coast line has many lovely bays, coves and cliff walks.

The town centre has good shopping, restaurants, bars, hotels etc. together with professional offices. Two new proposed business developments will augment the existing commercial centre with new supermarkets, apartments, cinema and retail outlets.

Schools include 2 mixed primary and 2 secondary, the latter soon to be amalgamated in a new green field site close to the town. There is also a junior Gael Scoil. There is a R.C. Church and a Church of Ireland community.

Numerous clubs including GA.A. soccer, tennis, golf, scout movement for boys and girls all welcome young and older members. There is also Tramore Race Course, a very popular venue especially for the annual 4 day festival meeting in August and the 2 day meeting at the New Year.
